Allergy Season is COMING!

By: Carolyn Medrano

Every native Houston knows what spring brings: summer-like weather, one day or so of weather that feels like spring, butterflies, flowers, green trees… And pollen. Lots of it. Allergy season can be a busy time at your physician’s office or local urgent care clinic. Patients arrive with symptoms like:

  • Sneezing
  • Watery eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Headache
  • Drainage
  • Stuffy noses
  • Sore throat

The culprit during this season is usually allergic rhinitis, also commonly called hay fever. Allergy sufferers are, thankfully, rarely alone. In 2013, the CDC reported 8.3 million children and 16.9 million adults had allergic rhinitis. The CDC also reported 11.1 million visits for allergic rhinitis in ambulatory care, in other words, visits to doctor’s offices or urgent care centers.

What can allergy sufferers do to relieve symptoms?

There are several holistic ways to relieve symptoms, including the use of netty pots, nasal saline flushes, and wearing protective masks when doing outside work.

Allergy sufferers can also take advantage of over-the-counter allergy medicines like Zyrtec™, Benadryl™, and Allegra™. These drugs are from a class known as antihistamines.

Additionally, if over the weekend you find yourself unable to wait for an appointment with your PCP, your local urgent care physician in Houston can prescribe stronger nasal antihistamines like Xyzal™ and Astelin™, even eye drops like Patanol™.

Another class of drugs, called corticosteroids, are available as nasal sprays, inhaled steroids, eye drops, and pills. These are currently available only through a prescription with a PCP or urgent care doctor in Houston. Nasal sprays like Flonase™ can help relieve nasal allergy symptoms.

If seasonal allergies are bothering you when you should be enjoying a Spring-time weekend, visit your urgent care center in Houston to discuss treatment.
