How to Keep Your New Year Resolutions

Before the ball drops there are talks about New Year resolutions and the goal of changing bad habits. Unfortunately, resolutions have the reputation of not being fulfilled. Every year millions of people swear to lose weight, save money, etc. but by the end of the year realize they quit after a month. Let’s make 2015 different by following these tips for the most common resolutions.

  1. Lose Weight/Get Fit & Healthy
    Losing weight is most likely the most common resolution and one of the most challenging as well. There are constant jokes about gyms being busy in the month of January but as soon as February rolls around that number decreases by a lot. One way of making sure you stick to your goal is setting a clearly defined, organized, and realistic goals. healthy-living-300x212In other words don’t expect you will look like a super model after a few months. A regular exercise program and activity such as Zumba, kickboxing, and yoga keep you interested and motivated. Personally, when I am active my body not only rejects unhealthy food but I simply don’t have the appetite for it. Last but not least, do NOT punish yourself for having that slice of cake or whatever it is that you like to indulge in. One slice will not make you gain weight. Instead of thinking of it as a “diet”, think about in a sense that you are simply trying to eat healthier for a better lifestyle/health.
  1. Get Organized
    Usually the first resolution to get sacrificed when your life starts to get a little to busy to manage is working out/eating right. The second one is getting organized. For the past few years I get a new planner in the beginning of each year determined to note all my plans, homework, deadlines, appointments, etc. down so I won’t forget nor procrastinate. Unfortunately, every year I look at my planner and I am only about to keep up for the first few month. With technology getting better and better there are many ways for us to keep our lives scheduled as well as our work and home environments. I recently realized that an electronic Ipad helped me keep organized instead of a paper one because the Calendar syncs to my iCloud, which allows me to view my weekly schedule no matter where I am. There is no longer a need to carry a planner with me at all times when I can just use my phone or laptop. Everyone always has their own way of keeping organized so set small tasks such as constantly updating your calendar or making sure you put things back where they belong instead of throwing it in one drawer.
  2. Spend Less & Save More
    Another resolution we set after reviewing how we spent our money the previous years. For example, living in a city such save_moneyas Houston I find if very difficult to not spend money on going out to eat so my goal is to cook more at home so I won’t have the urge to go to a restaurant as much. Always try to remind yourself that the $5 latte from Starbucks you buy everyday before work can cost you up to $1300 a year assuming you work a 9 am-5 pm job. We tend to forget that the little petty things we spend can add up to a huge amount that can be used towards our savings.
  3. Live Life to the Fullest
    It is no secret that sometimes we get so tied up in our lives and responsibilities that we forget to ignore the small things around us that we need to appreciate and love such as our family, friends, or significant other. The next time you have the option of taking the spontaneous trip to a local city or sitting at home watching a TV show, go on that trip! We forget that we only have one life that we should do what makes us happy or exploring places and things we have not done before. Step out our box and live the life you wish you had. Along with living your life don’t forget to responsible. Don’t think you can quit your job that puts food on the table because you want to travel the world. Once in awhile it’s okay to step out of your boundaries but not in ways where it will have a negative consequence to your life.

Don’t forget that at the end of the day these are your goals and resolutions so it is solely up to you how you plan to keep them. At the end of the year as long as you are happy with the person staring back at you in the mirror then no one can tell you anything.
